How to READ NAVIGATION MARKERS 2: in the Americas, Japan, Korea, Phillipines The boat is traveling through a channel keeping green on the right and red on the left. Just seeing this, we can tell that the boat is headed out from its dock. There is an old saying “red, right, return.” Meaning, keep the red on your right when you are returning home. Since the boat has green on the right, it is the opposite. The numbers are also telling us that the vessel is near open water. The lower the number, the

What do numbers on channel markers mean? If you see a channel marker number one and number two that means you’re at the entrance to a channel. If we reverse that, let’s say you see marker 50 and you are heading out to see. That means you should see about 49 more markers until you get out of that channel. If you are stressed out about docking your boat🛥️, How To Boating will help relieve that stress so you can enjoy your time on the water🌊, DM us for more info on private boating instruction 👨

Do you know the difference between these two channel markers? The channel marker on the right has a small yellow triangle at the top of the marker. This means it is an intracoastal waterway (ICW) marker. The other marker is your basic marker. With these two different markers, you have to read them two different ways. The saying for the regular channel marker would be “red right return” so as you returning from sea you keep the red on your right. But when you are traveling up or down the intracoa

HOW TO READ RED BUOYS: There are six major points to know based off of this buoy. 1- it’s a lighted nun buoy 2- the light will be red in a flashing or an occulting pattern 3- this will be marked as a symbol on your chart 4- the yellow triangle shows that it’s an intracoastal waterway marker 5- Since it is an intracoastal waterway marker, you will think of the saying “red dirt, green sea” 6- red markers will always have an even number and will increase from seaward and proceed along the conventio

How to READ NAVIGATION MARKERS - ICW vs regular: RED RIGHT RETURN is totally different than RED DIRT GREEN SEA. Red right return applies in most channels but NOT the Intracoastal Waterway. If you are coming in from the ocean, you should absolutely keep the red marker on your right when you’re returning. BUT When you are in the intercoastal, you must keep the red between you and the mainland and the green between you and the sea. This applies if you’re going north or south! #howtoboating #howto #

PREFERRED CHANNEL MARKERS: A preferred channel marker is a channel marker that splits one channel into two. For lack of better words it is a fork in the road. The main channel is going to be the shape and the color on top, which is the preferred channel and the secondary channel is going to be the color that is recognized on the bottom. #howtoboating #howto #boating #boat #yachting #channel #marker #driving #captain #buoy

How to identify INTRACOASTAL MARKERS: Intracoastal markers have small yellow stickers on them so people know it is the intracoastal waterway (ICW)! Regular channel markers do not have the stickers. 😃 think about this, we know a yellow buoy or marker means the area is a “special zone”, so the color yellow means special. Since there are yellow stickers on the mark, this means it’s a special marker - an ICW marker. #howtoboating #howto #boating #boat #yachting #yacht #captain #channel #marker #yel
